Can dogs and peanuts go together? Using peanut butter for dogs in home-made dog treats can add nutrition and lots of appeal to your home baked dog biscuits and cookies.
Peanut butter was actually invented around 1890 by a nutrition-conscious doctor who prescribed it for his patients in order to increase their protein intake.
The doctor was right about the high nutritional content of peanuts.
In addition to being high in protein, peanuts are high in amino acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, calcium, phosphorus and niacin.
Peanut butter can be tough to get
when it sticks to the roof of your mouth!
Using Peanut Butter and Peanuts for Dogs
Peanuts are actually legumes, not nuts. They are in the peas and beans family and they are good for dogs.
When making your own homemade dog treats, choose only pure, 100% peanut butter for your peanut butter dog treat recipes–to avoid dog treat ingredients that could be harmful to your dog.
As you know, peanut butter is widely available and it can be purchased at your local grocery store. Make sure that you read the label before you buy, though.
Some brands of peanut butter contain sugar (sometimes a lot of sugar), added oils and preservatives. To make sure that you are giving your dog the best nutrition, choose only brands that contain 100% peanuts!
Peanut butter is one of the most popular flavorings for dog treats! Healthy dog treats made with peanuts and peanut butter were some of the most popular items at my former bakery, Natural Pet Bakery.
A word of warning… Peanuts and peanut butter are great ingredients for dog treats, as long as you don’t overdo it. Peanuts can “put on the pounds” if your dog gets too many.
And, if your dog tends to be overweight, use peanut butter sparingly—as a special reward.
