The Carob Peanut Butter Balls recipe is so simple that it could even be a child’s first recipe.

And you will find that your learn to cook sessions will be more fun and a lot simpler, if you follow a few basic rules.

What to Look for in Dog Treat Recipes for Kids

What makes a good dog treat recipe for kids? The answer, of course, applies to all kinds of children’s recipes, including those made for the family.

When you first introduce your child to baking, keep these things in mind:

Cooking for dogs is fun for kids.

Keep the Recipe Simple

It goes without saying that, your child’s first cooking lesson should not for a gourmet dish, needing advanced cooking skills.

Just a Few Steps

Your child will do better if the recipe has only a few steps. Children have short attention spans and will only be interested in the project if it is completed in a short time. Fun recipes for kids begin and end quickly!

Just a Few Ingredients

It’s easier to keep track of what you are doing, and what you have done, if there are only a few ingredients.

Children need to develop the habit of checking and double checking to make sure they include all the ingredients in the recipe. This is much easier if there are only a few ingredients in the recipe.

Make it Fun!

Cooking for dogs is more fun if you can easily complete the activities. Younger children have not fully developed their fine motor coordination, so they will be more successful if their cooking tasks are easy enough for them to do, without frustration.

For example, leave the detailed dog cookie icing for older children or yourself.

Cooking with Children

Of course you can teach your children to cook on a rainy Saturday afternoon when they are looking for something fun to do. But there are a number of other ways that you can use kid friendly dog treat recipes.

While younger children will need lots of supervision when making dog treats, an older child may need only some emotional support, while she makes the treats herself.

Get your kids involved in the planning and in choosing easy kids’ recipes. Your kids will have a great time—and so will your pets.

Here’s an easy dog treat recipe to help you get started:

Ingredients for Carob Peanut Butter Balls

  • 4 tablespoons butter (1/2 stick)
  • 2 cups old fashioned rolled oats (quick oats or old fashioned oats)
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup carob powder
  • 1/4 cup chopped peanuts (optional)

Directions

  1. Measure the butter and place it in a mixer bowl at room temperature, until it softens.
  2. Add the peanut butter, carob powder and oatmeal to the bowl and mix until everything is evenly mixed.
  3. Chill the dough in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
  4. Take a teaspoon of dough at a time, roll the dough between your hands to form little balls. Place them on a baking sheet or silicone sheet.
  5. Chill the dog cookies in the refrigerator until they are hard. When they are hard, put the dog cookies in an airtight container, and keep them in the refrigerator until you are ready to serve them to your dog.

This carob peanut butter balls recipe is a great way to introduce your child or grandchild to cooking. It’s a fun way to bond, and you will be teaching your child baking skills that she will be able to use—forever!
