Homemade Dog Bones
Isn’t a dog bone just a dog bone? The answer is “yes” and “no”.
Dog bones have come a long way since the first crude dog biscuits and the first Milk Bones! Many now have organic human food grade ingredients and they come in a wide variety of flavors.
Of course, the bones you make yourself, are often the best quality! However, when you make dog bones from scratch, you’ll need to make a few choices:
You can often find a recipe that uses your dog’s favorite fruit or vegetable. Choose flavors that you know she likes, or try some new ones to add variety to her diet.
Don’t forget, though, that you can often substitute ingredients to make the recipe work for your dog.
Sizing your Dog Bones
If your dog is a puppy or has a weight problem, you might want to consider making mini bones, bones that are only 1” long. Using smaller dog treats will allow you to give your dog treats, but also cut down on the number of calories that she gets. And, with puppies, you won’t find yourself giving your puppy more treats than a little pup should get to stay healthy.
If you have a large dog, you will probably want to make medium size or larger dog bones.
The choices are endless—limited only by your imagination! And, in addition, you can even use other types of recipes, like dog cookie recipes or dog biscuit recipes to make bone shapes.
