Is cheese for dogs a healthy choice or is cheese bad for dogs? The simple answer is that, for most dogs, some cheese is beneficial.

But there are a few instances in which cheese may not be good for your dog…

Cheese is used in some dog food formulas, commercially. And it is easy to use in your homemade dog treats, as well.

While you can shred cheese for your dog biscuits, you can also purchase a cheese powder, which is a nice convenience.

Benefits of Cheese for Dogs

Consider the benefits of cheese.

  • It is high in protein
  • high in calcium!
  • Newer studies also indicate that it may actually re-mineralize your pet’s teeth
  • Cheese reduces the acids that cause plaque and lead to cavities!
  • It also helps to protect your aging pet from osteoporosis.

Dogs enjoy just eating an occasional chunk of cheese, and they will devour a cheese dog biscuit or dog cookie.

You can easily add cheese to your homemade treats by grating it fresh, or by using dried Parmesan cheese in your treat recipe. Alternatively, you can spread a tablespoon of cream cheese on your dog’s treats.

Try using Cheddar Cheese Powder in your dog treat recipes if you want to get that “cheddar” flavor. It’s a nice easy way to increase the protein and enhance the flavor of your homemade treats. And you won’t have to make any adjustments to your dog treat recipe.

When you should NOT give your dog cheese

There are three exceptions to using cheese with your pet.

  1. Overweight – If your pooch is overweight, cheese is one of those foods that can contribute to an existing canine weight problem. it can contribute to constipation in a dog that has digestive difficulties.
  2. Constipation – If your dog has problems with constipation, do not feed cheese to her. Cheese can contribute to constipation in a dog that has digestive difficulties.
  3. Lactose intolerance – The third exception is for a dog with lactose intolerance. Most dogs don’t have a problem with digesting dairy products, but, if yours does, avoid cheese in your dog’s treats and food.

The Bottom Line for Cheese

If your dog is healthy and within normal weight guidelines, you can feed her an occasional cheese treat. Your dog will really enjoy the taste of cheese and her cheese dog treats.

If you would like to purchase cheese powder for your dog’s treats (or for your own treats–it makes GREAT crackers and bread sticks), you can buy it at Amazon.

Consider using cheese in your homemade dog treats, biscuits and cookies. Used in moderation, it can be a healthy and safe addition to your pet’s diet and treat ingredients.
