This all natural dog treat recipe for Thanksgiving turkey dog cookies is the answer to serving healthy holiday treats to your favorite dog.
The Thanksgiving dog cookies are actually made with chicken broth, as turkey broth made with skin can trigger or cause pancreatitis in dog breeds that are susceptible.
While your dog should not eat turkey skin, the turkey meat is good for her. So use what you have on hand–cooked turkey or chicken, to make these dog treats.
The festive little “turkey dog treats” are also great to use as gifts for your dog’s friends and relatives. Place them in a party bag and you’re ready for any occasion!
Plan on 10-15 minutes to load your bread maker. Then let it do its thing.
When the dough is ready, it takes about ½ hour to cut the dog cookies and prepare them for the oven.Bake them and you’re done!
Once you get the routine down, these all natural dog treats are super easy to make!
Ingredients for Thanksgiving Turkey Dog Treats
- 1 cup chicken broth (can use your own homemade broth)
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 1/4 cups unbleached flour
- 1/2 cup cooked chicken or turkey, cut into very small pieces (Do not include the skin)
- 1 1/2 teaspoons dry baking yeast
- 1/4 cup oat bran
- 2 teaspoons chicken base (for extra flavor—optional)
- 2 teaspoons dried ground sage
- 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes
Directions
- Place all the ingredients in your bread maker according to the manufacturer’s instruction.
- Set the bread maker to the dough cycle.
- When the dough is finished, remove it and divide it into 3 pieces.
- Using a non-stick rolling pin, roll each dough ball into a sheet that is ¼” thick.
- Using turkey cookie cutters, cut out your turkey cookies and place them on a lightly greased cookie sheet or a silicone baking mat.
- Cover the dog cookies with a clean dish towel, and let them rise for about an hour in a warm place. I use the warming oven in my stove, and, on occasion, I’ve even set them in the car to use the solar gain (heat) of the sunshine.
- Bake the turkey cookies for 1 hour at 275 degrees F.
- Turn off the oven and let the cookies continue to dry overnight in the oven.
Make sure that the treats are extra dry, because they contain chicken broth and chicken chunks. If you have a dehydrator, you can finish the drying process by placing the treats in your dehydrator for a couple of hours.
If properly dried, these Thanksgiving turkey dog treats will be fine in your dog cookie jar for a couple months.
If you will be storing them for a longer time, place them in an airtight food storage container in the refrigerator or freezer.
