These candy cane dog Christmas cookies, made with oatmeal and cinnamon, have just a touch of dog treat icing to make them look like traditional Christmas cookies for people.

While the finished dog cookies are impressive, looking like you slaved in the kitchen for hours, the recipe is really quite simple.

Give the candy cane dog treats as gifts—save money—and enjoy the satisfaction of giving homemade dog treats to your friends and family for their pets.

A pretty package will make your gift more special, so make sure you give your treats a professional touch.

Place them in Christmas treat bags or cute little dog treat boxes like these gingerbread treat boxes or holiday striped boxes with a window.

To make the candy cane dog treats, you will need a candy cane cookie cutter.

When the cookies are baked and dry, you can add stripes to the candy canes, using a cookie decorating supplies.

I like to use the kind with little bottles, as they are so easy to use!

You’ll also need to make Royal icing or buy a sugarless yogurt dog treat icing.

If you think that stripes are too challenging, try making little dots with the icing. It’s easy to do, and the candy canes look cute with dots, as well.

Ingredients for Candy Cane Christmas Dog Cookies

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 tablespoon dry milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons dry baking yeast
  • 1 cup unbleached all purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons old fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Yogurt dog treat icing

Directions

  1. Place all the ingredients in your bread machine, in the order suggested by the manufacturer. Or, you can use a heavy duty mixer with a dough hook..
  2. Use the Dough cycle on your bread machine.
  3. When the dough is finished, remove it, divide it into 3 pieces and roll each piece to a 1/4” thickness, using a non-stick rolling pin .
  4. Use a candy cane cookie cutter to cut out your candy canes.
  5. Place them on a lightly greased cookie sheet.
  6. Bake the dog cookies at 275 degrees F for about an hour. Check them to make sure that they don’t get too brown.
  7. Turn off the oven and leave the dog cookies in the oven, to dry overnight.
  8. When completely dry, the Christmas cookies should be dry, hard and crisp.
  9. Decorate the holiday dog treats with dog treat icing by making candy cane stripes (or polka dots) as shown in the photo.

The finished dog cookies can be stored at room temperature for a month or two as long as you have dried them sufficiently. That means you can make your dog holiday treats ahead of time!

I hope you enjoy this Candy Canes Dog Treats Recipe. You’ll have fun with this one…
