Healthy dog food recipes give you the opportunity to make healthy homemade dog food, using ingredients you know are safe!

To be truthful, there aren’t many dogs, who have not had the occasional taste of people food. And, let’s be honest, they do like it!

The problem with feeding our dogs people food is not that the food is harmful.

The problem is that feeding table food without understanding dog nutrition (which is very complicated) makes it really hard to give our dogs a balanced diet.

The good news is that scientists know more about dog nutrition than they know about human nutritional needs.

Because of this, many veterinarians simply recommend that you feed your dog a commercial dog food that is balanced and complete.

However, this recommendation gets a bit more complicated, when you consider the frightening dog food recalls of the last few years. Why is this happening so often?

Feeding Dog Safe Food

Fortunately, we do have several options for feeding our dogs:

  • Purchase a high quality balanced organic dog food that is made from human grade ingredients and made in the U.S.
  • Make your own dog food, using healthy dog food recipes that have been developed by knowledgeable nutritionists and/or veterinarians.
  • Purchase over the counter dog food that is certified to be complete and balanced—making sure that you read the label to see the quality of the ingredients.

Homemade dog food is not necessarily inexpensive, but it is possible to save money on dog food that you make at home.

To help you get started, I have provided a couple of healthy dog food recipes (below) that were developed by veterinarians.

Healthy Dog Food Recipes #1
Beef and Rice

Ingredients

  • 1/2 pound ground beef
  • 1 hard boiled egg
  • 2 cups cooked organic brown rice
  • 3 slices whole-grain bread (cut into small chunks)
  • 1 teaspoon bone meal

Directions

  • Cook the meat.
  • Combine all the ingredients and mix well.

If the mixture is too dry, you can add some water. Milk will add extra calories. When using this dog food, you should provide a daily dog supplement to make sure that you dog is getting everything that she needs.

You will have to experiment a bit with the amount to feed. If you have an idea about what your pet’s ideal weight should be, you can use that as a guideline. Weigh your dog frequently to make sure that she isn’t gaining or losing too much weight.

Healthy Dog Food Recipes #2
Non-Beef Dog Food

If your dog is allergic to beef or you prefer not to use it, here is a natural dog food recipes that does not use beef.

When using this recipe, it is recommended that you use a daily dog multivitamin supplement to make sure that your dog is getting all the nutrients that he needs.

Ingredients

  • 1½ pounds ground chicken, turkey or lamb, browned and drained
  • 1 medium potato, cooked and smashed
  • 2 cups cooked organic brown rice
  • ½ cup grated raw carrots
  • ½ cup cooked old fashioned rolled oats
  • ½ cup cooked barley
  • ½ cup chopped broccoli or green beans
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons brewers yeast powder

Directions

Mix the ingredients together and store in the refrigerator for up to 7 days. Or, alternatively, freeze the dog food in daily sized portions.

At serving time, add a little yogurt to your dog food recipes . For a toy dog, add 1 teaspoon and for a medium sized dog, add 1 tablespoon.

Yogurt will help to maintain your dog’s healthy digestive system. If you prefer, you can use a probiotic supplement that contains nutritious probiotics that add healthy bacteria to your pet’s digestive system.
