My chicken dog bones recipe is flavored with chicken and chicken broth, and is very easy to make for your hungry dog or puppy! It uses only safe and healthy natural human grade ingredients.
You can make these dog bones with or without chicken. If you are on a tight budget, you can use chicken broth as a flavoring, without the expense of including chicken.
However, if you have some canned chicken or cooked chicken leftovers that you want to use, you can add protein and flavor to your dog treats by adding finely chopped chicken pieces to the dough.
I make these dog bones with dog bone cookie cutters in 3 sizes: 1 inch, 3 inches, and 5 inches. I love the 1 inch size because it’s so versatile!
The 1″ size dog bones have so few calories (9 calories per bone) that you can feed them to overweight dogs, big dogs, small dog breeds or even puppies.
And you can use them for training treats. It’s almost like you don’t have to count the small amount of calories, if you give them to large breed dogs!
The dog bone treats in the picture are the larger 5″ size, which are a better choice for large breed dogs. Or, if you prefer, break a larger bone into smaller pieces for a smaller breed or puppy.
Chicken Dog Bones Ingredients
- 1 cup chicken broth (or 1 cup water and 2 tsp. chicken bouillon powder)
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
- 1 1/2 cup unbleached flour
- 1 1/2 tsp. dry yeast
- 1/4 cup oat bran (can use oat bran cereal)
- 1 cup cooked chicken, chopped into little pieces
Directions
- Place all ingredients in your bread maker in the order that the manufacturer suggests.
- Set the bread machine for “dough”.
- When the dough is ready, remove it and divide it into 3 equal portions.
- Roll into sheets (with a non-stick rolling pin) that are 1/8”thick for small (1inch) bones, ¼” thick for 3” bones and ½” thick for 5 or 6 inch bones.
- Cut out your bones, making sure that your bone cookie cutter has lots of flour on it so it doesn’t stick.
- Bake the bones at 275 degrees F. The little bones will only take a few minutes (perhaps 30); the 3” bones should bake for about an hour. And the large bones should bake for at least an hour and 15 minutes.
- Turn the oven off and let the bones sit in the oven for several hours or overnight. The large bones will take quite a bit longer than the others. When they are dry, the treats will be hard and crisp, with no “give” to them.
Thoroughly dry chicken dog bones can be stored at room temperature for a several months in your favorite dog cookie jar in a cool dry location.
If you plan to keep them longer, or you are not sure that they are dry enough, put your dog bone treats an airtight food storage container in the refrigerator or freezer.
